An online interactive resource targeting budgeting through the provision of personal finance information, practical exercises, role play and lesson plans. Contains a glossary of terms, parents’ page and teacher materials, as well as online activities for students.

There are three case studies which enable students to reach decisions on the following financial problems which could affect young people: - Kelly is in her second year of university and is finding it hard to make ends meet. Raj is in big trouble. He’s overspent, over-borrowed and his flashy car won’t start. Jack is planning big changes in his life with a family and home, how can he plan his savings and expenditure to meet his needs?

Assessor's comments

This resource is presented in a simple and concise manner and navigation of the website is very easy. The information supplied provides pupils with the skills to complete the exercises successfully.

The teaching plan provided enables the teacher to open up the topic, through role play and discussion, to allow the pupils to discover that budgeting is not only a personal consideration but also has national and global dimensions.

The provision of a section for parents allows the exercises to be set for homework as well as informing and including the parents.

Russell Winnard's comment:

My Money Matters

Focused on budgeting this resource enables students to use ICT to develop skills around income and expenditure. The use of ICT is particularly helpful for those students that find the number work in budgeting difficult due to the online calculators and templates. ICT facilities would be required to use the resources, although, by working in pairs or small groups, there can be considerable learning through discussion. The case studies that follow the initial activities could be used as a form of peer assessment and outcomes discussed with the group.
