This resource is designed for young people aged 14 to 17, including recent school leavers who may be enrolled at college, on a work-based learning programme or simply wondering what to do next. The resource will also be relevant to many young people up to the age of 25. The resource provides a series of activity based lessons, notes for facilitators or teachers, student worksheets and a series of fact sheets. The resource is designed to provide a basic introduction to key aspects of finance personal and general. The activities are generally done in groups and are very interactive. The role plays are based around the lives of 4 young people and the financial choices they are making. The Challenges could provide real opportunities for young people to demonstrate what they have learned from earlier activities. Additional material supports the development of budgeting and planning for the future

Assessor's comments

This resource contains information and activities which are easy for the teacher/group leader to present and for the students to use. The aims of the activities are clearly stated and the activity sheets are backed up by the fact sheets provided. This enables the students to research answers and increase their knowledge of many aspects of finance.

Moneychoices could provide an excellent enterprise resource to develop the underpinning knowledge of financial education whilst also providing the real opportunities to demonstrate understanding through the £3/5/10 challenges. Each activity can be taught as a one off lesson but maximum value for the students would be gained by presenting either a selected group of the activities or all of the activities to the students in a progressive manner. This would obviously depend greatly on the time available.

This resource very effectively draws the correlations between living learning and earning, ensuring that young people in the target group understand that all choices in life and work are cross implicated.

It will introduce a course on Personal Finance or can be used to gauge student knowledge at the end of the course.  Many of the questions have relevant links to other parts of the programme, so teachers can follow up issues raised.

The Money and Me section can be used as an excellent icebreaker at the start of the programme.  It is a good initial way of getting students to explore their attitudes to money and their hopes and fears for the future, in financial terms.

Russell Winnard's comment:

Financial Capability

Teaching personal finance to Yr10 and 11 it can potentially be difficult to maintain student engagement. Fortunately this resource contains six good examples of interactive activities that KS4 students engage with well. Each activity can be easily differentiated as necessary and can be used as either a stimulus for further learning or as the core part of a planned lesson. The double sided Factsheets are also very helpful for group research and discussion around key areas.
