Budget Brains
Budget Brains is a newly developed, innovative hands on class set that follows the financial transactions of six unique characters. Budget Brains is aimed mainly at KS2 mathematics but is also flexible enough to include key areas in KS3. Each character is portrayed in ‘top trump’ style with their incomes, number of family members, marital status, mortgage/rent arrangements etc. The task for each pupil is to follow each character through their financial dealings – taking ownership of their spending and budgeting whilst recoding their transactions and tracking their balances. Budget Brains aims to instill real financial awareness amongst the next generation of consumers.

The extension activities are useful for adding additional challenges, e.g. research supermarkets to find the cheapest place to purchase items on a shopping list.
Advanced learners could play the game individually instead of in a group which would make it more challenging.
Suitable for special educational needs
Colorful handouts lend themselves to demonstrating to learners what household bills and insurance documents look like.
Assessor's comments
A comprehensive resource for upper KS2 or early KS3 useful for developing pupil’s practical maths skills and competency with money. The resource introduces them to the day to day reality of running a weekly household budget, surviving on a set regular income, making financial decisions and coping with unforeseen circumstances.
The majority of a school’s personal finance education could well be delivered through careful use of the resource, using self-contained activities before building up to the full game.
