Special education needs (SEN)
pfeg’s mission is to make sure that everyone leaving school has the skills, knowledge and confidence in financial matters to participate fully in society. This has to includes young people with special educational needs (SEN) if they are toin order to help them make a successful transition into independent living.
pfeg recognises that SEN covers a wide range of learning styles, needs and disabilities, including:
- young people with severe learning disabilities (SLD)
- pupils in mainstream or special school environments
- learners with sensory impairment
- gifted and talented/higher ability learners
- young people who are reluctant to learn.
Some of these will require a range of differentiated approaches, materials and resources to allow such students to access learning alongside other pupils in mixed ability classes. opportunities that will develop their financial capability throughout the curriculum.
At pfeg we understand the priorities for learning and teaching and learning among all groups of students, and have the expertise to support them.
Accessible and adaptable resources
As part of its commitment to supporting SEN, pfeg recognises that teachers need resources that can be readily adapted to different situations. We are developing them with an awareness that SEN students may:
- find concentration difficult and require short learning sessions
- require activities that provide a clear sense of achievement
- find written instructions offputting
- have difficulty transferring concepts from one context to another or recalling them over time.
pfeg has developed a resource package aimed specifically at learners with special educational needs – Spending Sense. This was developed in collaboration with nasen (formally known as the National Association for Special Educational Needs) and teachers working in the SEN field. It provides a whole range of activities and materials and covers topics from budgeting to furnishing a bedroom at an affordable cost.
Spending Sense is downloadable in PDF and Word formats so that you can save and adapt the materials yourself to make them relevant to your pupils. Spending Sense is totally free of charge, and can be downloaded from the link below.
