Special needs education (SEN)
pfeg recognises that SEN covers a wide range of learning styles, needs and disabilities, including:
- young people with severe learning disabilities (SLD)
- learners with sensory impairment
- gifted and talented/higher ability learners
- young people who are reluctant to learn.
At pfeg we understand the priorities for learning and teaching among all groups of students, and have the expertise to support them.
Accessible and adaptable resources
As part of its commitment to supporting SEN, pfeg recognises that teachers need resources that can be readily adapted to different situations. We are developing them with an awareness that SEN students may:
- find concentration difficult and require short learning sessions
- require activities that provide a clear sense of achievement
- find written instructions offputting
- have difficulty transferring concepts from one context to another or recalling them over time.
In 2008 pfeg launched a resource package aimed specifically at learners with special educational needs – Spending Sense. This was developed in collaboration with nasen (formally known as the National Association for Special Educational Needs) and teachers working in the SEN field. It provides a whole range of activities and materials and covers topics from budgeting to furnishing a bedroom at an affordable cost.
Spending Sense comes in hard copy and as a CD ROM so that you can save and adapt the materials yourself to make them relevant to your pupils. Spending Sense is totally free of charge, and can be ordered by clicking the link below or ringing pfeg on 020 7330 9470.
Working directly with schools
pfeg offers support to all secondary schools in England through its Learning Money Matters programme, including schools specialising in SEN. The programme provides consultants to work with schools and identify their particular needs, tailoring workshops and resources to each situation. pfeg avoids a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
