All-Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People
Justin Tomlinson MP is the Chair of a new All-Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People, for which pfeg will provide the secretariat in partnership with MoneySavingExpert.com. The group was launched at the House of Commons on 31st January 2011. There are 225 members across all parties to date, making it one of the largest APPGs ever.
Purpose
Its purpose is to provide a medium through which MPs, Peers and organisations with an interest in financial education, can:
- discuss the current provision on financial education in schools and colleges;
- ensure young people are equipped to make informed financial decisions;
- help make resources and qualifications available to young people in education;
- support schools in the delivery of financial capability; and
- encourage the introduction of a requirement on schools and colleges to provide financial education.
The group is split in to four strands:
- Primary and Secondary schools, led by Andrew Percy MP
- Further education, led by Duncan Hames MP and Nic Dakin MP
- Vulnerable young people, led by Teresa Pearce MP
- Higher Education, spokesperson Martin Lewis (MoneySavingExpert.com)
The Primary and Secondary strand of the group launched an inquiry in to Financial Education in the Curriculum in March 2011. The inquiry report was launched on 12th December and can be found here.
The Further Education strand has also launched an inquiry into the provision of financial education in further education institutions. The report will be launched in support of the Primary and Secondary report. Details here.
