Educational research being conducted at Felpham Community College has resulted in students drawn from both Felpham and Bognor Regis Community Colleges taking part in a unique mathematics project to sharpen up their personal finance skills.

The initiative, called Smart Money was for able year 10 students and aimed to increase their engagement, confidence and aspirations. Local MP Nick Gibb praised the pupils:

“These pupils have shown commitment to improving their skills in mathematics. I think this is a positive example for all young people. Maths is a vitally important subject, critical for understanding the world, managing your money, as well as equipping young people for the world of work and business.”

Supported by pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group) and funded by the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics, the research led to the development of “Smart Money” a  12 week course which students attended in their own time. They were astonished at how important mathematics was going to be in their financial future. Daisy Alderson from Felpham Community College said:

“This interesting course was so much fun and I learnt so much about how to manage my money. I think everyone should learn what we learnt. I now understand better utility bills, car insurance, investing in shares and credit cards. It made mathematics real and relevant.”
