pfeg is delighted to welcome the Ministerial announcement made today by Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, that personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE education), which includes personal finance, is to become statutory from 2011.
This follows the review led by Sir Alastair Macdonald that recommended in March 2009 that PSHE education should become part of the statutory National Curriculum in both primary and secondary phases and the public consultation which followed his report. Ed Balls confirmed today that the programmes of study that already exist in the secondary curriculum and that are proposed for the new primary curriculum will be the basis of the core entitlement that all pupils should receive. This means that, subject to the legislation being approved by Parliament, financial capability will be required to be taught to all pupils in every school in England – a situation that has never before existed.
pfeg continues to offer advice and support to schools and teachers in teaching financial capability through our website www.pfeg.org and team of expert educational consultants who are based throughout England and support primary and secondary schools and local authorities across pfeg’s regional offices.
