Coin Recognition Activity : A resource for young people with learning difficulties

A pack with the focus on coin recognition for those with moderate to severe learning needs. Activities cover three levels of ability and bring together basic skills of coin recognition, addition of money and calculating change in format that acknowledges the age and maturity of students.

This resource has been specifically developed to support the Excellence and Access Project (2001 -2004).

This activity has been designed to help teachers working in special or main stream secondary schools that have young people with moderate and severe learning needs.

The lesson assumes three levels of capability reflected in the different coloured edges of the cards:

Green - highest
Red - middle
Blue - lowest

The following items can be downloaded here for free (please note you will need Acrobat Reader to open the files):

The lesson incorporates the visual and kinaesthetic sensation of real and replica coins and therefore tries to bring an element of realism and variety of learning styles to the lesson.

Replica coins and counting counters can be ordered from www.hope-education.co.uk and are around £12 plus P&P. You can also order by post although this is more expensive: Hope Education, Hyde Buildings, Ashton Road, Hyde, Cheshire SK14 4SH.

Please send any comments on the pack to info@pfeg.org.
